The equipment is produced by the American Boston Dynamics and has already been successful on the Internet when dancing at the Rolling Stones
Rock in Rio, one of the largest music festivals in the world, starts on Friday 2. Last week, the organization of the event announced that, in addition to about 2,000 professionals, two “robot dogs” will be part of the security system of Cidade do Rock, in Rio de Janeiro. In the role of lookout, the little robot – he called stainof the American company Boston Dynamics – should be responsible for organizing and monitoring part of the audience present.
This is because Spot has cameras and 5G connection to connect in real time with the event security center. According to the organization, the little robot will also be able to quell fights and detect dangerous situations, such as fires or bomb disarming, for example. In addition, he will be responsible for managing the queues and sending images in real time to the Operational Control Center of SegurPro (CCO), the company responsible for the security of the event. But what else can it do?

Introduced by Boston Dynamics in 2016, Spot never had a specific use defined by the company – the manufacturer’s indecision with its robots impacted its sustainability and contributed to Hyundai’s purchase in December 2020.
Thus, Spot was successful in Internet videos posted from Boston. The high degree of complexity of its mechanical part has drawn attention, reminiscent of the “Metalhead” episode of the Black Mirror series, available on Netflix. From there, the robot became a character in other productions and artistic interventions on the net: he had cameras and paintball guns attached to his structure and he even danced with Mick Jagger in a video released by the American company.
But the robot-dog’s abilities seem to marry monitoring. The main skill of the Spot, which weighs 25 kg, is to explore and map the terrain: according to the company, it manages to escape obstacles and maintain balance in extreme situations. In addition, it is possible to add up to four hardware modules to the machine, to include new features in specific jobs: with this, Spot can check for gas leaks if it has, for example, a methane detector.
The robot can reach a speed of about 5km / h and has a battery life of 90 minutes. It’s rain resistant and can even climb stairs, according to the company.
The Spot hit the market in 2019 and was even put up for sale by the company for around $ 74,000. At first, the sale was restricted to the United States and brought the four-legged car the focus of several uses, as a spy and police aide.

‘Moves like Jagger’
Rock in Rio won’t be Spot’s first experience with the world of music. Last year he danced like Mick Jagger. The line, which led Spot to move to the Rolling Stones, was a tribute to the 40th anniversary of the “Tattoo You” album – the adaptation was called “Spot Me Up”. To perform the dance, the robot dog had to learn to imitate the iconic movements of the British band’s singer – the recording process took about six hours, according to the website. TechCrunch.
Eventually, Spot appears alongside Jagger for nearly a minute and a half of choreography. Of course, the video was one of Boston’s attempts to go viral to advertise the creation and his work with robots.

The robot was also adapted by the security forces (and critics of the military use of the equipment). Last year, the American artist collective MSCHF installed a paintball gun on the equipment to criticize the military’s use of robots. The performance placed Spot in a gallery where users could control the robot via an app, shooting various pieces that decorated the room. It was all streamed live on the website of the art collective, which paid $ 74,500 for Spot-sniper’s installation of the weapon.
In NYPD, the robot has already been used for hostage operations and armed situations. After an armed robbery, police officers “controlled” the robot dog to enter the invaded apartment and check if there were still criminals or victims in the place. The decision was made to avoid a possible firefight between the parties.

Another aspect of Spot is to mix the guard skills with those of the heroine of the movie “Indiana Jones”. Earlier this year, Boston Dynamics’ robot dog was tasked with monitoring the “lost city” of Pompeii, Italy. The intention is, in addition to protecting the ruins of the ancient city, to help monitor the region via camera and scanning technology.
Spot will, however, also be sent on exploratory missions: during the tours of the ruins, the robot will travel through underground tunnels dug by thieves of the time (almost two millennia ago), before Pompeii was hit by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in the year 79. Currently the ruins of the city remain an important archaeological site in the country, located near Naples, about 250 km from Rome.
