roots

The connection with the history of her own family is something important for the singer, according to her, it serves as a change of direction in life. Ghabi went to reencounter this story based on her connection with her maternal grandfather, of Lebanese origin, and an ancestry test to better understand her origin, which resulted in a search for knowledge about life in the Middle East.

His research resulted in an encounter with tarot and numerology, which indicated a need to change the spelling of his name. Thus, the artist introduces an “h” after the “g”, becoming known as Ghabi, now adopting a new brand, which outlines a new career direction.

Exclusive interview with Ghabi

How was the decision to leave your career in law to launch yourself as a singer?

It was a difficult decision and one that took a lot of courage. I was no longer satisfied with my profession, I had become disillusioned with many things, but I had struggled a lot to get there. I did two postgraduate courses: one in financial and tax law at UFF and the other in entertainment law at UERJ. I studied a lot, worked a lot, but it was never my dream. Music has always been in my heart since I was a child. My first contact with a piano was at the age of 3 when I entered the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. However, when I became a mother, this desire for change and the search for happiness became even stronger. My first son is completely passionate about music, and every time I played him a note on the piano, he looked at me with such admiration that I started to trust myself again. How could I tell my son that he should go after his dreams if I didn’t do it myself? So I took courage, consulted my spirit guides (I’m very spiritual), and felt it was time for me to follow this path, which has always been mine. I am here.

2 – For you, what defines a song as “pop”?

Pop music is music that plays and is welcome in all places, homes, social classes, types of parties. Pop for me is what is popular, what people like. That song that makes us dance and be happy without many judgments.

3 – How did your ancestry influence your musicality?

It made me understand my tastes and references and what kind of pop I want to present in my discography. I’m tired of more of the same.
I was always very proud of my origins and I wanted to somehow transcend that to the public. Deepening the study of Arab culture and bringing this musicality to my work is a way of honoring my family, my ancestors, my race that is so marginalized around the world. My latest EP is entirely shaped by this aesthetic, which ranges from the rhythm to the instruments used in production, such as the tabula and the flute. I tried to bring the Arabic aesthetic to my Latin and Brazilian language, and make a sound different from what has been seen in the market. Adult pop. From there came the Latin Maghreb.

4 – What are your biggest musical references?

I am a woman influenced by many other strong and powerful women, and among them I can mention Shakira, Beyoncé, Iza, Baby do Brasil, Rita Lee, Marisa Monte and Vanessa da Mata.
