Michael Beinhorn, who produced the band’s last two albums before Blood Sugar Sex Magik, acknowledges that the group “sounded awful” in the past.
Many people are surprised to discover that the Red Hot Chili Peppers was formed in 1983. The band was practically a veteran when it reached definitive stardom almost a decade later with Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), the fifth studio album of his career.
According to the producer Michael Beinhornwho worked with the group on the two albums prior to blood sugar — The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987) and Mother’s Milk (1989) —, the explanation for why the group didn’t break out before is quite clear: they sounded bad in their previous works, released in the 1980s. The opinion was shared in an interview with the channel Produce Like a Pro (via Alternative Nation).

In this ocasion, Beinhorn said that the Red Hot Chili Peppers needed to go through a stoning process when it started producing The Uplift Mofo Party Plan. Detail: it was already the third album of the band.
“Those were very complicated times, but I continued to meet with the people from the record company, the EMI. One employee said he had an artist for me, but he didn’t know what to do with them. It was something deeper than that. The people at the record company despised the band, as they were too different, they went against any kind of pre-established standard”, he recalled. Beinhorn.
In the end, it wasn’t entirely the fault of the red hot, since they were working with a company that didn’t even understand their potential. No wonder they only broke when they changed record labels: they left EMI and went to Warnerwhere they launched Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
They looked at the red hot in a relatively conformist way. They paid attention only to what the general public would like to hear, letting the ‘pearls’ escape. There were some things that, with some effort, could generate something amazing. It was their case.”
“Wow, the Red Hot Chili Peppers suck”
In the end, the lack of support within the label itself generated material that Michael Beinhorn defined it, without mincing words, as “horrible”. “I remember listening to their demos and thinking, ‘wow, this is awful’. However, there was something interesting there that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.”
In the producer’s view, the group had great potential to transcend styles. This was notably noticed in later works, when the mix between funk, hip hop, classic rock, alternative rock and pop melodies took shape.
“There was a strange energy to all of their songs. The fans really liked it”, pointed out the producer. “The only problem is that it still hadn’t been combined in some way that made sense. I think that’s what I managed to do with The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.”
