Metallica: New single is ‘old man’s music’, says famous youtuber guitarist

According to guitarist Ola Englund, ‘Lux Æterna’ is ‘okay’ as a song and reflects a band ‘aging’

THE metallica pleased most of the fans with “Lux Æterna”, first single from his upcoming album, 72 Seasons. The music dialogues directly with the roots thrash metal of the band, in addition to having a rhythmic and melodic construction that refer to the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) that so influenced the members at the beginning of their careers.

Although, Hello Englund doesn’t seem to have been so convinced by the song. With more than 770,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, the guitarist and digital influencer surprised by giving his opinion on the single saying that it is “old man music”.

According to the transcript of Guitar Magazinethe Swedish instrumentalist said that the production of the track – signed by Greg Fidelman in partnership with the members James Hetfield (voice/guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums) is “great”, but that the song itself is “okay”. For him, the composition sounds like a band that is “aging”.

“It’s a good song. The more I listen to it, the more I like it, obviously. But it’s a very rockabilly kind of music, to listen to while driving a car. To me it sounds like the metallica growing old. They sound old. there is a little bit of motorhead and maybe even a vibe megadeth on the riff there. But it’s old people’s music. It’s okay, it’s still enjoyable to a certain extent.”

Lars Ulrich’s drums on “Lux Æterna”

Another topic covered by Hello Englund in the video makes direct reference to a controversy involving “Lux Æterna”. When the single was made available in late 2022, some fans criticized the drum recording of Lars Ulrich for, incredibly, sounding “too precise” – which raised suspicions that it wasn’t him playing or that some computer program had done its job.

However, the Swedish guitarist doesn’t believe the Danish drummer “cheated” in any way. “There is a lot of double pedaling at the beginning of the song and Lars isn’t exactly known for mastering the double pedal. Today he may not be living his peak, but in the music itself, he’s pretty badass. Maybe he practiced, people can improve.”
