Vanessa da Mata sings Brazilian reality in “Foice”

Singer Vanessa da Mata launches this Friday (27) the unprecedented track Sickle, which brings the context of the Brazilian reality and the role that cultural heritage plays in our lives. The single, which features the legendary cellist Jacques Morelenbaumis now available on ONErpm digital platforms.

Sicklewhich was the first song Vanessa recorded for what would become the album come sweethas his conception explained by the singer: “This song is about syncretism, this multiplicity of Brazilian religions, which is the psychologist and advocate for the afflicted. It is about the bushmen, the Pajés, the people who really know herbs and an intense attempt to balance amidst the tumult , lack from many kinds of perspective, from the existential hole, from the non-combination, from the unpreparedness and from the unbalanced burden we pay in taxes, having almost no infrastructure, all this being a bizarre result of the political incompetence that drags on over the years and that afflicts. In addition, education is increasingly despised, which breeds all kinds of primitivism, such as racism, homophobia, feminicide, murders and rape of indigenous people, as if they were subhuman, just because they do not live like us, without that unbridled and crazy ambition. All this generates the non-recognition of our diversity as wealth, but as if we were pulverized, weakened by being plural, and for me it’s culturally and, it’s the other way around. This song is an afrobeat and has this idea of facing mistakes, the anguish of the most eager and, at the same time, asking for strength so that these mistakes don’t steal much more from our daily balance, harmony and health. What is basic for many countries is ultra-luxury for us.”said the artist.

Jacques Morelenbaum, longtime collaborator of Vanessa, is a cellist, arranger, conductor, music producer and composer. About the collaboration with this big name in Brazilian music and his relationship with the musician, the artist comments: “Whatever Jaques Morelenbaum has in talent, he’s got it in light and playful! A perfect combination. He’s been with me since my demo record, even before I had a record label, which he’s done since music production, first record in production and also playing and producing ‘Tomorrow is far too much’ and playing on the second album ‘História de uma gata’ He produced one and sent it to my old label, who hired me through Liminha at the time, 20 years ago! Having him on the record is always exciting. He takes the songs to another level of sophistication! Much love to you Jaques and your beautiful family!”

Sickle it is an integral part of a project of unpublished works that it presents Vanessa da Mata exploring different musical genres, combining these elements with the silky and distinctive voice for which she is known. The artist’s poetry and powerful highs are enhanced by the song’s arrangement and her incisive words echo harmonically through the instrumental.
