Anita (29) made history in the Grammy de 2023. She was the first Brazilian to compete for Artista Revelação since 1974. Eumir Deodato (79), who competed for the award almost 50 years ago, was the last musician from Brazil to be nominated in the category. Before him, the nominees Tom Jobim (1927-1994) and Astrud Gilberto (82) didn’t win either, but lost to giants: the Beatles.
The two competed separately with the famous boy band, Petula Clark (90) and Morgana King (1930-2018). Tom Jobim and Astrud lost to the Beatles who, on the night, were competing for five awards, but only took two.
Astrud, who was married to the creator of bossa nova Joao Gilberto (1931-2019), became famous for being the voice of the English version of “Girl from Ipanema” and, despite losing to the Beatles as Breakthrough Artist, won the Record of the Year category with “The Girl From Ipanema”. she won from Barbara Streisand (80), louis armstrong (1901-1971) and The Beatles themselves, who beat her in the other nomination. The singer marked the history of the Grammys by being the first Brazilian nominated as a Revelation Artist, alongside Tom Jobim.
As the first Brazilians competing in the category, they were followed by Eumir Deodato, in 1974, who also received the nomination. Only in 2023, almost 50 years after the last nomination of a Brazilian for the Grammy Award for Breakthrough Artist, did Anitta bring Brazil back into contention.
“It’s been 50 years since Brazil has been nominated here in a Grammy category. A lot of people don’t know, but the Grammy is divided into several parts, and here, this part, it’s been almost 50 years since this happened. So for me, I don’t even know It’s so much work, so much effort, we listen so much not on the way. I’m super happy”, said Anitta in an interview on the red carpet.
The artist, who recently broke through abroad, had the hit “Envolver” in the Top 10 of the Spotify global. Despite the success, she did not take the prize home, losing to the newcomer. Samara Joy (23), who even received curses from Brazilians in the networks for the victory over the carioca.
