Ne Zha 2 Matches Spider-Man With $2 Billion Box Office

The box office milestone of Spider-Man: Brand New Day highlights the huge success of Ne Zha 2 after both films hit two billion dollars.

Ne Zha 2 Matches Spider-Man With $2 Billion Box Office

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed two billion dollars at the box office, casting new light on the massive theatrical success of Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2.

The latest Marvel Studios release reached the two billion dollar benchmark in a remarkably short time. That rapid ascent puts into fresh perspective the financial achievement of Ne Zha 2, which stood as the highest-grossing and most profitable movie of 2025.

Box office revenue data shows that Ne Zha 2 generated earnings comparable to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Matching the box office figures of a flagship superhero release underscores the scale of the animated movie's performance.

Marvel Studios, led by company president Kevin Feige, spent years developing the superhero franchise and establishing actor Tom Holland in the role of Peter Parker across multiple standalone films and crossover events. In contrast, director Jiaozi achieved comparable returns for Ne Zha 2 while relying almost entirely on viewers in a single domestic market: China.

Single Market Box Office Performance

Industry reports note that while Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to pull significantly ahead of Ne Zha 2 by the end of its global theatrical run, the initial financial crossover between the two films remains unusual for modern cinema.

Ne Zha 2 is a Chinese 3D animated fantasy feature directed by Yang Yu, who works professionally under the name Jiaozi. The film is a direct sequel to his 2019 blockbuster Ne Zha, which adapted classical Chinese literature from the sixteenth-century novel Investiture of the Gods and became one of the highest-grossing animated films in Asian history.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day represents the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a media franchise owned by The Walt Disney Company that has produced dozens of superhero films since 2008. Tom Holland has played the titular character since his debut in Captain America: Civil War in 2016.

Crossing two billion dollars at the international box office is a rare feat achieved by only a small number of titles in cinema history. Having two distinct productions reach or approach that threshold in close succession points to positive momentum for movie distributors.

Post Pandemic Cinema Landscape

The global theatrical market has experienced widespread volatility following the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Numerous high-budget studio projects and long-running film series have struggled to match pre-pandemic earnings in recent years.

Despite those ongoing commercial headwinds, unexpected theatrical phenomena continue to emerge. In the summer of 2023, the simultaneous releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer generated a mutually reinforcing box office surge often referred to as Barbenheimer, encouraging patrons to buy tickets for both films.

Greta Gerwig's fantasy comedy Barbie, produced by Warner Bros., and Christopher Nolan's biographical drama Oppenheimer, distributed by Universal Pictures, demonstrated that contrasting cinematic releases could jointly boost overall theater attendance.

The strong financial performance of both Ne Zha 2 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day provides further evidence that audiences remain willing to visit theaters for high-profile releases, preserving the unique appeal of the big-screen experience.

Theatrical Outlook

As Spider-Man: Brand New Day completes its full theatrical run across international markets, movie analysts expect its final cumulative earnings to exceed Ne Zha 2 by a substantial distance.

However, the performance of Ne Zha 2 has already proven that single-market animated releases can compete directly with Hollywood's largest blockbusters at the global box office.
