Netflix announced a new Brazilian original drama series titled Dom de Iludir on Thursday, September 10, starring veteran screen actress Marieta Severo alongside Alice Wegmann and Nanda Costa.
The global subscription streaming service launched an unreleased teaser trailer across its social media channels to announce the project. The preview features Latin Grammy-winning singer Liniker performing a fresh rendition of the classic track Dom de Iludir, originally written and recorded by legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso.
International Emmy Award winner Mauro Mendonça Filho is directing the project as general director. The series is being produced by Conspiração Filmes, one of the leading independent film and television production houses in Brazil, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro.
Tensions and mysteries in the art world
The plot revolves around art collector Lúcia Rossetti, played by Severo, a celebrated figure in Brazilian television, theater, and cinema. Severo shares the screen with Wegmann, who plays her daughter Maíra, as the two characters navigate a turbulent and complex personal relationship.
Their lives cross paths with a woman named Irina, portrayed by Costa, another prominent Brazilian screen actress. According to an official statement from Netflix, the arrival of Irina triggers an intensifying web of mysteries and emotional tensions between the central characters.
The supporting cast includes well-known figures in Brazilian television drama, such as Felipe Camargo and veteran actor José de Abreu. Netflix has not yet provided details regarding a premiere date or the total number of episodes for the series.
Global audience for Brazilian productions
The announcement comes at a time when Brazilian series and telenovelas are recording strong viewership numbers on global streaming platforms. In July 2024, the Brazilian drama Pedaço de Mim, released internationally as Desperate Lies, ranked as the most watched non-English series on Netflix worldwide.
Starring Juliana Paes and Vladimir Brichta, Pedaço de Mim reached the number one spot on Netflix top viewing lists across 17 countries. These included Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Poland, and Slovakia, while securing a spot in the Top 10 across 73 countries.
Streaming success across rival networks
Rival streaming networks have also seen substantial demand for Brazilian television content. On HBO Max, the digital streaming platform owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, the telenovela Beleza Fatal set audience records after launching in February 2024.
Beleza Fatal became the most watched Brazilian title on HBO Max since its debut on the service. According to data provided by the platform press office, viewership for the telenovela expanded more than fourfold following its premiere.
