Netflix has begun developing a television adaptation of Nicholas Binge's short story Understudy, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
The American trade magazine, which covers the Hollywood entertainment industry, stated that the global streaming service is working on a new crime series based on the author's work. Binge is a writer known for his speculative thrillers and science fiction. A release date for the upcoming project has not yet been announced.
The narrative of Understudy centers on a protagonist who works as an actor. The main character is invited to travel to South Korea to take on an unusual acting role. The East Asian country has grown into a major international powerhouse for television and film production in recent years.
At one point, the actor finds himself surrounded by a sudden series of strange crimes involving the murders of several people. He then comes to the realization that he must uncover a massive conspiracy.
Producing Team and Cast Details
The television project will be produced by the filmmaking duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Lord and Miller are the creators behind the science fiction film Project Hail Mary, a space survival thriller based on the novel by Andy Weir. The Hollywood producers are also known for their work on successful franchises like The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, and the animated Spider-Verse films.
Actor Steven Yeun has also joined the Netflix adaptation as a producer. Yeun first gained widespread international recognition for his starring role on The Walking Dead, the long-running AMC television series about survivors navigating a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. Yeun has since built a highly acclaimed career with lead roles in films like Minari and the television series Beef.
While Yeun is officially attached to Understudy in a producing capacity, it is currently unknown whether the artist will also play any of the characters in the crime series.
