US Streaming Shows Lose Audience Over Long Season Delays

Research from Luminate Intelligence shows that long breaks between seasons lead to steep viewership drops for streaming TV series in the US.

US Streaming Shows Lose Audience Over Long Season Delays

American media analytics company Luminate Intelligence has released a study showing that long delays between seasons significantly reduce television viewership for streaming platforms across the United States.

According to the report, waiting more than one and a half years for new episodes leads directly to a shrink in audience size within the US market. Analysts evaluated how distribution strategies for major series impact consumer demand for subscription services.

The research highlighted several high-profile original productions affected by extended hiatuses. For the fifth season of Stranger Things, average views for the final episodes dropped by 23 percent over a period of three and a half years.

Stranger Things is a science fiction drama series created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix, which premiered in 2016 and became one of the platform's flagship titles. Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, operates one of the world's largest subscription video streaming platforms.

Audience drops for Wednesday and major series

A similar trend impacted the popular series Wednesday, where a gap of more than two years between seasons saw viewership on Netflix drop by 59 percent.

Wednesday is a supernatural mystery series starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, based on characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams. The show launched on Netflix in late 2022 to record-breaking audience numbers.

Earlier reports indicated that a lengthy break between season releases also hurt the popularity of Guy Ritchie's television series The Gentlemen. The continuation reached 6.7 million views during its first four days after premiering, which was 45 percent lower than the debut of the first season that released on Netflix in 2024.

Guy Ritchie is a British filmmaker known for crime comedy movies, who adapted his 2019 film into the television spin-off. Luminate's findings highlight how extended production schedules across the television industry reduce viewer engagement for digital platforms.
