Netflix has released the first trailer for Unabomber, a new biographical film starring Jacob Tremblay as young Ted Kaczynski alongside actor Russell Crowe.
Directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, the drama follows the journey of Kaczynski from a mathematical genius at Harvard University to total isolation and violent domestic terrorism.
The story begins with Kaczynski entering Harvard at just 16 years old. An exceptionally intelligent yet socially isolated young man, Kaczynski gradually descends into an increasingly dark world before becoming the infamous figure known across America as the Unabomber.
Harvard University, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the United States. Kaczynski earned his undergraduate degree there before later earning a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Michigan.
Dual timelines and psychological experiments
A central focus of the narrative centers on Kaczynski's university years and his involvement in controversial psychological experiments supervised by Professor Henry Murray, played by Russell Crowe.
Initial footage from the film indicates that the relationship between Murray and Kaczynski forms one of the core psychological axes of the story. The production seeks to examine both the crimes Kaczynski committed and the formative experiences that shaped him, placing Crowe in one of the darkest roles of his screen career.
The narrative does not restrict itself solely to the origins of the perpetrator. Decades later, the plot shifts to a relentless investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, featuring Agent Joan Miller, played by Shailene Woodley, as she attempts to track down the fugitive.
The FBI serves as the principal domestic law enforcement agency in the United States, responsible for investigating federal crimes, terrorism, and high-profile domestic manhunts.

Speaking on Netflix's Tudum platform in July, director Janus Metz Pedersen explained that the narrative alternates between two distinct timelines: the formation of the Unabomber and his ultimate capture by law enforcement authorities.
Pedersen described the film as the portrait of a young man who feels increasingly marginalized from broader society and ultimately decides to turn to violence as a mechanism for revenge. The project explores how an individual who managed to remain hidden from authorities for years was eventually tracked down.
The screenplay for Unabomber was written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves. The supporting cast includes Annabelle Wallis, Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Mark Menchaca.
Nelson Greaves, Donald J. Lee, and Sam Chalsen serve as executive producers on the project in collaboration with production studio MRC. Sophie Cassidy is producing the feature on behalf of 2.0 Entertainment.
