Prime Video to Release Stephen King's Carrie in October

Prime Video will release a new television series adaptation of Stephen King's novel Carrie on October 7, 2026. The upcoming production serves as one of the streaming service's major horror releases for the year.

The series is created by Mike Flanagan, an experienced filmmaker known for adapting King's literary works. The project shares key thematic elements with Netflix's flagship hit Stranger Things, including young lead characters, supernatural powers, and a central terrifying threat.

Supernatural powers and character parallels

The story focuses on Carrie White, an isolated young woman who possesses extraordinary supernatural abilities. Her telekinetic powers make her an extremely dangerous individual, yet she is also a vulnerable teenager who barely understands how to relate to those around her.

That combination of vulnerability and raw power creates a strong parallel to the character Eleven from Stranger Things, created by the Duffer brothers. However, unlike Eleven, Carrie has no intention of becoming a heroine. Her journey is defined by abuse, isolation, and school bullying, and her powers ultimately become a threat to everyone around her.

Key changes to King's original story

Flanagan's adaptation introduces notable changes from earlier screen versions of the novel. The series soft-pedals the character of Carrie's mother, transforming her from an extreme and abusive figure into a protective parent who wants to shield her daughter above all else. This altered dynamic closely mirrors the protective relationship between Eleven and Police Chief Jim Hopper.

Another major change involves the origin of Carrie's abilities. The series explores the roots of her telekinesis and introduces the possibility that other individuals possess similar supernatural powers. That creative choice reflects one of the most discussed storylines in Stranger Things, where producers expanded Eleven's narrative by introducing other gifted characters.

Streaming space and release date

The Prime Video project has the potential to step into the space left by Stranger Things while offering the distinct draw of King's original source material. King published Carrie as his debut novel in 1974, and the book previously inspired Brian De Palma's 1976 film adaptation starring Sissy Spacek as well as a 2013 remake.

Flanagan has previously directed several acclaimed horror titles, including adaptations of King's work. Fans will be able to see the complete series when it premieres on Prime Video on October 7.
