Queen Letizia of Spain has worn capri trousers in Mallorca for over 20 years, anticipating what has become the main fashion trend for autumn 2026.

The knee-length trousers are taking over from bermuda shorts this season, with low-cost fashion brands selling basic beige designs for under 30 euros.

Royal summer style in Mallorca

Queen Letizia was first photographed wearing beige capri trousers on the streets of Mallorca in 2004. She paired the cropped trousers with a white masculine-style shirt and navy Menorcan sandals.

During her annual summer holidays on the Balearic island with the Royal Family, Letizia frequently relies on light, fluid, and casual garments to build relaxed Mediterranean looks from versatile wardrobe basics.

Queen Letizia married King Felipe VI of Spain in 2004, and the Spanish royal family traditionally spends part of their summer vacation at Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca. Menorcan sandals, known locally as menorquinas or abarcas, are traditional leather footwear from the nearby island of Menorca.

Return of Y2K pirate trousers

Two decades ago, the cut was commonly referred to as pirate trousers. Although capri trousers were previously considered a debated staple worn mainly during childhood and adolescence for casual comfort, they have returned to mainstream fashion with a 2000s aesthetic.

Over recent months, the style has appeared in legging cuts, neutral tones, polka dots, and military prints favoured by influencers and celebrities. Simple beige designs are expected to reign as the most versatile choice for the coming season.

Capri trousers were originally created in 1948 by fashion designer Sonja de Lennart and named after the Italian island of Capri. The design ends below the knee, offering a flattering silhouette for women of all ages and heights by creating the appearance of extra height for shorter wearers.

High street fashion for autumn 2026

Capri trousers are shifting from casual wear into formal office attire. Minimalist styling options on social media show the trousers paired with classic footwear including loafers, flat sandals, and sensible low heels.

Low-cost high-street brands including Zara, Mango, and Bershka have launched designs inspired by the pair Letizia wore two decades ago. Bershka is offering capri trousers for under 30 euros starting in September, available in beige, white, black, and military green.

Spanish fashion figures have also embraced Balearic holiday style in Marbella, where singer Marta Sánchez wore Spanish espadrilles similar to those favoured by Queen Letizia, and Telma Ortiz wore a Mango dress for a gala evening.
