Criticism of ‘Eyes of fire’, new adaptation of Stephen King

Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Zac Efron lead the cast of the umpteenth adaptation of the horror master.

start review of Fire Eyes, the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel at the Blumhouse factory, affirming that it is a film closer in body and soul to the work of Andrei Tarkovski than what is customary in Jason Blum’s production company and what is usual in King audiovisual could scare the devourer of the films of the house and the fandom of the Maine writer. The ascetic and sober feature film directed by Keith Thomas and written by Scott Teems flees from frightening, although it does seek to make us feel afraid, especially of ourselves, strangers locked up in strange bodies and monsters trapped in the land of monsters.

Fire Eyes It must be the most claustrophobic movie, in a completely obsessive way, that one remembers within the genre in recent times. Thomas became known with The Vigil, the Jewish wake of a deceased and the demon that appeared that night to snatch his soul, a work of absolute confinement (and cold sweat) but far from the radicalism of this, apparently, more commercial project. 90 minutes composed of close-ups, very close-ups, terrifying detail shots and more open shots that compress the characters in a Tarkovskian way that anticipates the impossibility of fleeing from a fatal destiny that is born of the human mind.

Perhaps some viewers abhor this impudent approach to Stephen King’s story (which is a pop and conspiracy twist to carrie Y the dead zone) who sticks his camera to the faces and bleeding eyes of his tortured beings with powers/curses; that sacrifices the pyrotechnics innate to the original and, above all, to the nice series B that was the eighties film directed by Mark L. Lester and with an unforgettable Drew Barrymore. The explosions of anger and fire in this Fire Eyes they are of a disturbing and uncomfortable coldness, as icy and dry are the deaths that occur on this trip with clear religious overtones (as religious was The Vigil)where God has abandoned victims and executioners to their fate.

It could be a superhero movie (they talk about them, of course) blind, as blinded are all the members of this tragedy that subverts terms such as revenge, guilt or forgiveness. It could be, yes, a King pyrokinesis divertissement like the Mark L. Lester version was, even with quotes from it (there are: the same poster, Charlie’s jean jacket, her face whipped by bursts of fire). However, despite the soundtrack by John and Cody Carpenter or the scene where the girl meets the three biker boys, which is like a reminder to stranger things (which is Stephen King and is Fire Eyes), all is darkness even in full sunlight.

For pyromaniacs of the conventions of King horror cinema.

The best: the walk through the underground of ‘La Tienda’.

The worst: the prayer for the burned cat.
