Criticism of ‘Cinco lobitos’, the great winner of the Malaga Festival

Laia Costa and Susi Sánchez lead the cast of Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s first film.

There is a scene in a hospital that defines not only the character and tone of ‘Cinco lobitos’, but also its change of direction: four characters advance down a corridor towards the camera, four characters that the viewer already knows beforehand, but, at that moment, something is no longer the same in their lives, something that invades the rest of the story. A transit to another world and problematic is taking place. One of these characters will involuntarily give way to another. And the script written by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa herself will be reformulated, adding nuances and new and unexpected situations, and will be enriched. All this, without losing the taste for detail and subtlety, a hallmark of the winning film at the last Malaga Festival.

From exquisite discretion and absolute tact, ‘Cinco lobitos’ talks about mothers with courage, affectionate mothers, mothers who find it difficult to explain their feelings, mothers who find their tools to exercise as such and mothers who are leaving these tools parked. By law of life, for reasons beyond his control. That the story is not typical or already seen is to the credit of the director and also of its two female protagonists: Every tear, look and body movement of Laia Costa and Susi Sánchez are carefully controlled by two excellent actresses who tell everything from sobriety. There is no room for fuss or underlining.

Death, dissatisfaction in the couple, the role of grandparents, professional success, infidelity, memories, stories, nursery rhymes, falls, matriarchy and patriarchy, the protective instinct or the weight of tradition and of traditions are themes that flow throughout a film that reminds us that it is possible to recover lost time to finally steal those kisses and caresses that you could not or did not know how to steal.

For tasters of really emotional stories

The best: his absence of a broad brush, the duel/pact between the great Laia Costa and Susi Sánchez.

The worst: that someone thinks, from the outset, that they have already seen this story. Nothing is further from reality!.
