Albert Espinosa signs the script for the film, about a gang of five boys who live an unforgettable summer.
They say that nostalgia is (almost) always right-wing, but in these times in need of magic and mythology I don’t think it’s a bad thing to occasionally look back armed with the wisdom that distance brings. They do so, using a careful recreation and an inspired youth cast, Dani de la Torre and Albert Espinosa, in this portrait of a unique gang in rural Galicia in the eighties. ‘Live is Life’ is not so interested in the conflict and adventure as in capturing the power of the moment, the inner procession, the group dynamics of these kids with a consciousness of death, which distances it, for good, from the pyrotechnics, so often devoid of soul, from series like ‘Stranger Things’. And although here the quinquis are the fierce antagonists (another success), ‘Live is Life’ ends up rhyming in a shocking way with the sequence that closed the iconic ‘Navajeros’ (one of the best movies of the quinqui cinema): that extra poetry that arises from confronting pain and tenderness, anguish and joy, resignation and hope. Life and nothing else.
For that immense minority that prefers ‘Count on me’ to ‘The Goonies’
The best: the sequence of the dive in the ‘chunga zone’.
The worst: the shadow of ‘Heroes’ (Pau Freixas, 2010) can harm it.
