The actor brings to life the painter who became famous for his cat portraits in this biopic in which Claire Foy also participates.
Louis Wain captured the innate ridiculousness of cats, who play cards, drink tea and play the violin in his drawings. Fortunately, Will Sharpe sees beyond this catlike universe and poses this biopic like a kind of tragicomic tale, of those that begin with a once upon a time and have their own narrator (voiced by Olivia Colman) to guide us through the hero’s journey. The director strives to understand how Wain’s mind worked, who managed to deal with his schizophrenia through the constant process of creation and his ability to reflect the electricity and nonsense of the world through his art. The movie is also like this: tells a dynamic story using ellipses, a great sense of humor and fantastic touches, and embellishes its bitterest parts with beautiful visual constructions and explosions of color.
With a charming Benedict Cumberbatch, and moving between the energetic narration of ‘The Incredible Story of David Copperfield’ and the visual eccentricities of Wes Anderson, Mr. Wain dazzles even as he tries to cover more history than he should.
