Criticism of ‘CODA’, the most awarded film at Sundance

For those looking for a dose of optimism in these uncertain times.

Direction: Sian Heder Distribution: Emilia Jones, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant, Eugenio Derbez, Amy Forstyh Original title: CODA Country: United States, France, Canada Year: 2021 Release date: 02-18-2022 Gender: Drama Script: Sian Heder Photography: Paula Huidobro Synopsis: As CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), Ruby is the only one in her family who can hear. When the family’s fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between her love for her music and her fear of abandoning her parents.

The best: it is not a mere copy of the original of which it is a remake.

The worst: the music lacks the strength that the plot requires.

There are films whose main attraction lies in their simplicity, which are enjoyed until the end even if their plot is predictable. That is the case of ‘CODA’, whose secret lies in the optimism with which it approaches situations with which it is easy to identify: the illusion of a first love, the need for children to mature and start their own lives, the melancholy that It produces the empty nest syndrome for parents, the overcoming of physical barriers that put seemingly insurmountable obstacles to being happy. This American remake of the French ‘La familia Bélier’ (É. Lartigau, 2014) has all of this. It does not match the original, but it is a highly esteemed film, which provides successful innovative elements with respect to it, such as the sequence that shows the limitations of the protagonist’s father and brother, who are deaf and dumb, when they go fishing without her. This is brought to life by a captivating Emilia Jones in a very different register from ‘Ghostland’ (P. Laugier, 2018). The result is a delicious feel good movie, one of those that encourage you to face the world with renewed strength. Even the histrionic Eugenio Derbez is bearable.
