a restless love it is a film (yet another one) about an illness, a subject that is always serious, however, treated by Lafosse with an admirable justness of tone, refractory to emphasis, to drama, to underlining. In fact, the calm, serene pulse of his staging contrasts with the altered state of the protagonist, a painter with psychological problems, bipolar disorders and reluctant to take prescribed medications, which leads him to be frequently admitted to the hospital. It is clear that Lafosse is not particularly interested in recreating his episodes of crisis and violence, but rather in illustrating his effects on the daily life that he shares with his wife and his son. The film is a journey through the Friday nights of a family with a punctual imbalance, captured in a diaphanous, natural, “al dente” way. As in the equally splendid after us (2016), centered on the breakup of a couple, Lafosse explores the decomposition of the family unit, paying special attention here to the woman’s emotions and progressive despair, an outstanding performance by Leïla Bekhti.
