Ariadna Gil and Daniel Grao lead the cast of the new film adaptation of a novel by Paul Pen.
Family relationships and secrets translated into plot twists form an inseparable part of the work of writer Paul Pen, someone with whom the phrase “No one is a prophet” in his land takes on all its meaning. And nobody better than him to adapt his third novel for the cinema, in which these two elements once again have vital importance. The scriptwriter and director Carlota González-Adrio, another talent from the inexhaustible quarry of ESCAC, go hand in hand to describe, with modesty as a flag, the story of that apparently perfect family that lives isolated from the outside world. Both of them they punctuate properly, pulling the oppressive atmosphere and stale air, which will come later in the form of a disturbing element (excellent Ricardo Gómez) in the purest style of ‘El seductor’ (D. Siegel, 1971) although later the shots go the other way.
Wisely playing with the clichés and the wide range of grays in the face of the morally questionable acts of the story, the film, with a tribute to ‘Misery’ included, fully agrees with the master Hitch: “It is better to start from the topic than to reach it.” Well that.
For lovers of family dramas with oppressive atmospheres
The best: the children’s casting and the unhealthy atmosphere that transpires.
The worst: that seasoned viewers smell the plot twist.
