Michelangelo Frammartino directs this drama based on real events in which we discover, together with cavers, one of the deepest caves in the world.
If Michelangelo Frammartino’s cinema aspires to anything, it is to see beyond the surface, something he achieves both literally and metaphorically in ‘Il buco’, his new work after ‘Le Quattro Volte’ (2010). again in search of the immersive experience somewhere between documentary and fiction, the film builds a story that combines the recreation of an expedition by a group of speleologists in 1961, who plunged into the depths of the Bifurto Abyss in Calabria, with the life of a local shepherd. Both scenarios are connected through sounds and images that invite us to observe, wander through the planes and move us with the magical simplicity of a sublime landscape. Meanwhile, the memories of the world begin to resurface, whether in the unexplored paths of an ancient cave or in the aged skin of an old man who throws messages to the wind. Soon the borders of the parallel montage blur and the underground is also the subcutaneous, and the secrets of the earthly are also those of the human soul.
To stop time and see the world from a new perspective
The best: the breathtaking beauty and hypnotic quality of its images.
The worst: that its calm rhythm can cause drowsiness to more than one.
