Blumhouse Productions and James Wan join their demonic forces to tell us the story of this robotic doll.
When Steven Spielberg arrived at one of his references such as Pinocchio, he did so by taking a stimulating shortcut (very respectful in the end with the literary original by Carlo Collodi) science-fiction from the hand of the novelist Brian Aldiss (author of the story that was adapted). and Stanley Kubrick (the director who was considering the project). The splendid result was AI artificial intelligence, a story about mothers in absentia, and on the run, where artificial beings were incapable of understanding those imperfect machines called human beings. Years later, she is a gynoid, programmed to give the affection and protection that a mother by force does not contemplate as something natural, the one that she reinterprets, from the extreme side of unconditional love, the tale of the wooden boy. m3gan gives to debate about what the maternal instinct is, its limits and if it is something human or something reproducible by means of logarithms. It also lends itself to criticism of an increasingly artificial/virtual world where technologies (and social networks) have taken over the care and education of children. Everything perfect, of course, and yet (thank some mechanical god) m3gan it does not stay in the message, it even erases it as the memory of the Kubrickian Hal 9000 was erased from 2001: A Space Odyssey because the New Zealander Gerard Johnstone’s film is a mischievous and terribly funny story to not sleep (does the Freddy of Narciso Ibáñez Serrador and years later Paco Plaza?) fantascientific that takes almost to the extreme of satire the Metal Souls, The Stepford Women or the misunderstood Metooist variation of it, Do not worry dear, its classic premise of fearing the beings created by man as much as we fear that God who they say created us.
m3gan It is a black comedy, a lot, and above all, very firecracker. It blows up the new maternity hospitals, the obsession with child overprotection, today’s society and each and every one of the red lines that seem to have defined a terrain such as relationships at home and with minors. It’s not Devil Doll because he is not so interested in reducing the scale of the slasher as in blurring the differences between a kind of malrrollero ultra-realism girl-nanny and some flesh and blood characters that appear to us as profoundly empty. m3gan is the (artificial) daughter of its director and of his iconoclastic and gay spirit as attached to the antipodes as what the Australian PJ Hogan did with Peter Pan (and! Shadow Menace!) in the little revered Love without conditions. version of AI Artificial intelligence for the hell of TikTok, and apocryphal remake of that reverent John Waters titled The Mommy Murders, m3gan reproduces the structure of the sitcom fantaterror from the previous one and excellent Housebound, by Gerard Johnstone, of course, while, in a subtle and systematic way, dynamite with a viral plasticized smile (the one with a thousand masks of the genre, beginning with the very disturbing and childish/lolithic one from the seventies The face of death) each and every one of the ticks of Blumhouse productions, not coincidentally the film’s own production company.
