Ti West directs this horror movie set on a Texas farm in 1979.
If the cinema changed in the 70s it was thanks to porn and horror with dirty realism. Many times they were side by side along the same paths, even aesthetic ones. ‘X’, the extraordinary and uncomfortable (two sex scenes of a sick and disturbing poetry) walk that Ti West invites us to go through, unites both genres as if the Mitchell brothers’ seminal ‘Behind the Green Door’ (1972) with Marilyn Chambers and interracial sex (replicated here) and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ (1974) by Tobe Hooper (tributed by West even in the crocodile in ‘Deadly Trap’) were actually a single film. A single lewd and bloody nightmare where desire and pain, and intercourse and murder, were inseparable parts of the same organic, animal and profoundly human act. ‘X’, set not by chance in a 1979 year of filming ‘Friday the 13th’ (1980), goes from one format and one texture to another (the opening of the film) until that pornographic ‘The Farmer’s Daughters’ that the protagonists roll becomes the transition scenes of an unhealthy, gore and inside bleak and moving slasher.
For carnal deep throats that scream with pleasure and horror at the same time.
