Sir Rod Stewart appeared in high spirits on Wednesday night as he cheered alongside his son Alastair at Celtic Park in Glasgow.

The 81-year-old legendary singer, a renowned Celtic fan, joined his 20-year-old son to watch the team compete in the UEFA Champions League play-off first leg match against Austrian side LASK.

Rod looked over the moon as he rejoiced with the crowd when Celtic took the score to 2-0 before half time. The hitmaker looked to be in good health after recent health problems forced him to pause his live music performances.

Celtic Park is the home stadium of Celtic Football Club in Glasgow, Scotland, while the UEFA Champions League represents Europe's top club football competition.

Rod Stewart, 81, appeared in great spirits as he cheered alongside his son Alastair at a Celtic football match on Wednesday night after cancelling his tour following health problems

Medical procedure and tour cancellation

The football appearance came after Sir Rod was forced to cancel the remainder of his 2026 tour dates and take four weeks off to recover from a routine coronary stent procedure. A coronary stent procedure is a medical operation designed to open blocked heart arteries using a catheter.

Rod was due to perform a series of concert dates in the United States and Mexico as part of his One Last Time tour, including a six-night stretch at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

His team shared the medical news last week on his Instagram account, confirming that following further medical evaluation, Sir Rod Stewart had successfully undergone a routine coronary stent procedure.

Statement from his team confirmed: "Doctors are pleased with his recovery, and Rod is doing very well and has returned to his normal daily activities. On the advice of his doctors, he will take the next four weeks to recuperate and regain full fitness before returning to the stage. Unfortunately, this means he will be unable to continue his current tour dates."

They added that information regarding affected performances will be communicated by the respective promoters and venues.

The Maggie May singer also provided a comment on his health, stating: "I'm already feeling better and very much on the mend. I want to thank the doctors, nurses and everyone who has taken such wonderful care of me."

"I'm deeply disappointed to miss these shows and sorry to let my fans down, but I look forward to getting back on stage and having a good time with you all again soon. Rod," he added.

Earlier health setbacks on tour

The heart surgery followed several earlier health setbacks that led to cancelled gigs earlier this year. Organisers confirmed that Rod pulled out of his August 9 performance at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati due to undergoing an unforeseen but minor medical procedure.

In June, the rocker was forced to cancel a concert in California after suffering a respiratory infection that spiralled into laryngitis, an inflammation of the vocal cords that impairs singing.

A week later, Rod paused his concert in Utah and relied on an oxygen tank while on stage, a step that could have been due to the high altitude.

He also postponed his June shows at the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, citing the need for vocal rest.

World Cup attendance backlash

Rod later addressed fan uproar regarding his decision to attend Scotland's World Cup match less than 24 hours after cancelling his California concert due to ill health.

The singer was pictured in Boston cheering on the Tartan Army during Scotland's first World Cup match against Haiti, sparking widespread backlash online from supporters who questioned his inability to perform.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, the singer admitted his error, saying: "No, I got an awful... I really shouldn't have gone to the Haiti game. You know, I had to cancel a show the night before because I just had no voice left."

The hitmaker explained his motivation for attending despite the optics. "But the truth is, Jim, I wasn't going to let my two sons down," he said. "I promised them since they were born that we were going to go to a World Cup. And this is the first one that's come about."

"And it wasn't a good look, I admit, but I'm going to have to just take the stick," Rod added. "So I did it for the boys."

Sir Rod Stewart is one of the best-selling music artists in history, with a career spanning more than six decades and hits including Maggie May and Sailing. He was knighted in 2016 for his services to music and charity.
