Russian actors have no prospect of building major careers in Hollywood despite recent international roles, film critic David Shneiderov told news agency NSN.
His remarks directly contradicted comments by People's Artist of Russia Vladimir Mashkov, who told state news agency TASS that Hollywood remains a serious platform opening broad prospects where strong Russian characters and emotional performers are always in demand.
Shneiderov warned foreign actors against building illusions about breaking into American cinema, stating that Hollywood is structured around domestic performers and a specific segment of Spanish-speaking talent because half of the population in the United States speaks Spanish.
According to Shneiderov, performers from Germany, France, and Italy face identical barriers, noting that no Russian actor has ever established a major career in Hollywood, just as no French actor has done so.
Shifting character types in cinema
Addressing the demand for strong characters in global cinema, Shneiderov stated that while the need for compelling screen personalities remains constant, visual archetypes undergo significant shifts over time.
He explained that while earlier generations favored textbook handsome leads like Alain Delon or striking figures such as Jean-Paul Belmondo, both icons of classic French film, contemporary audiences lean toward actors like Timothée Chalamet alongside enduring types like Matt Damon, whom he described as having the face of an Oklahoma combine operator.
Shneiderov argued that foreign performers who find work in American productions are confined to specific character niches. He cited Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, who primarily plays German characters, and Belgian action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, who works in B-category movies playing foreign roles.
Rising Russian talent and overseas distribution
Shneiderov acknowledged that young Russian actors Mark Eidelstein and Yura Borisov, whom he described as having an eternal Dostoevsky look in his eyes, are currently taking steps in American film, but maintained no Russian actor will ever match the global popularity of Hollywood leads like Tom Cruise or Robert Pattinson.
Mashkov serves as artistic director of both the Moscow Oleg Tabakov Theatre and the Sovremennik Theatre, two of Russia's most prominent drama venues. The title of People's Artist of Russia is a state honor recognizing exceptional contributions to the performing arts.
Separately, Telegram channel Radiotochka NSN reported that the Russian psychological thriller The Abyss, starring Mark Eidelstein alongside Tina Stojilkovic and Stepan Belozerov, has been secured for distribution in the Republic of Korea.
