Sacrifice film by Romain Gavras opens in Russian cinemas

The American comedy drama Sacrifice, directed by Romain Gavras and starring Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, opened in Russian cinemas on August 20, 2026. Official screenings launched nationwide following initial festival viewings held a year earlier.

The 100 minute feature, produced in the United States, combines elements of drama and comedy. Distributing company Mid March Media released promotional video footage for the film on the Kino Trailers channel ahead of its theatrical release.

Set against the backdrop of a volcanic eruption in Greece, the narrative follows scientists monitoring the escalating crisis with anxiety. Meanwhile, a group of cultists armed with assault rifles believes that an apocalypse will emerge from the volcanic vent.

According to the cultists, the impending disaster can only be halted by offering three human sacrifices into the volcano. The group maintains that at least one victim must fully embrace the belief and step into the molten lava voluntarily.

The characters face a high stakes choice after being told that stepping into the flames will save their families and all of humanity. However, they are left without any proof that their self sacrifice will succeed rather than result in pointless death.

Director Vision and Auteur Style

Gavras said the central theme of the movie is a leap of faith. The director uses the hyperbolic scenario to explore the terror of sacrifice when outcomes are unknown, comparing the situation to leaving a stable office job for unpredictable creative work, quitting a dental practice to become a musician, writer, or poet, or leaving a respected company to build a dream video game.

The film represents an independent auteur project created without intervention from focus groups, merchandise marketers, or corporate managers. Gavras, a prominent music video director known for his work with Jay-Z and Kanye West, brings a distinct visual approach to the narrative.

Visually, the picture incorporates music video aesthetics alongside dramatic shots of concerts, nature, and the active volcano. The film also features comedic sequences, including a notable scene involving applause and the character played by Evans.

Cast Performances and Critical Reception

While actors Salma Hayek and John Malkovich appear in brief minor roles, Taylor-Joy leads the emotional core of the film. Her performance in the final scenes depicts a transition from panic to inner calm, marked by trembling lips and chattering teeth as her character faces the climax.

Throughout the finale, Gavras resolves the story existential metaphors directly, offering clear answers to the audience rather than leaving an ambiguous conclusion similar to the spinning top featured in the sci-fi movie Inception.

The film arrived in Russia after festival critics who viewed the movie a year prior labeled it pretentious, stupid, and unworthy of attention. However, initial reviews published by Championat.com awarded the movie a rating of nine out of ten, highlighting its visual style, musical score, and lead performances during its 100 minute runtime.
