Sandra Bullock has spoken candidly about the intense personal turmoil surrounding her 2010 divorce from Jesse James, describing the period following their split as a dark time when she struggled to grieve while protecting her newly adopted infant son.
The 62-year-old Practical Magic 2 star reflected on the media frenzy that erupted 16 years ago during a conversation with actress Jennifer Aniston, 57, for a new profile published in Interview Magazine.
Bullock married West Coast Choppers founder James in 2005, but the marriage imploded in 2010 following public revelations of his infidelity with tattooed model Michelle "Bombshell" McGee, leading to their divorce.
In April 2010, James checked himself into a rehabilitation facility in Arizona to seek treatment for sex addiction after apologizing profusely to Bullock, though the gesture was not enough to save the marriage.
Bullock is an Oscar-winning American actress known for her roles in films including Speed, Miss Congeniality, and The Blind Side, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. James gained national prominence as a motorcycle builder and television personality through his California-based custom shop West Coast Choppers.
Filming Gravity in Isolation
During her conversation with Aniston, Bullock explained that her role alongside George Clooney in the 2013 sci-fi movie Gravity held profound personal significance because her character's situation mirrored her emotional state at the time.
"The one film that was the most meaningful to me, because it was paralleling where I was, was Gravity," Bullock told Aniston. "It was during a really dark time in my life. I was raising and protecting a little smurf while I was trying to grieve, trying to get out of it."
Although Clooney was her co-star, Bullock spent much of her time shooting while strapped to an axis rig inside an LED light box without a physical scene partner, finding it an isolating experience.
"Being locked in a box by myself with no one to talk to for nine hours a day, you do a lot of thinking," she said.
Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, went on to achieve major critical and commercial success, earning seven Academy Awards. Aniston, who conducted the interview, is an Emmy-winning actress best known for her role in Friends. Interview Magazine was founded in 1969 by artist Andy Warhol and is known for feature-length Q&A discussions between celebrities.
Hiding Her Son From Paparazzi
By the time production on Gravity began, Bullock was already mother to her first child, Louis, whom she had secretly adopted in early 2010. Extra media attention focused on her after details of James's infidelity emerged, forcing her to take extreme precautions to keep her newborn hidden.
Joking about how she managed to maintain privacy, Bullock told Aniston about finding an unconventional way to move her son out of her house undetected.
"I was just cleaning out the closet, and I found these hockey bags for stuffing clothes in for travel," Bullock said. "Child Protective Services, do not come after me, but when the poop hit the fan for me, when, we know what that is, I realized I had to get out of the house because the paparazzi were going to descend, and no one knew I had a newborn."
Bullock revealed that she put the baby in his car carrier, placed the carrier inside the hockey bag, and zipped it up around him before carrying it past photographers like a regular piece of luggage.
"You have to operate like the CIA," Bullock said. "If you’re surrounded by good people, you’ll be fine. But if people near you mean you harm, no matter how covert you are and how much pre-planning you do, your privacy is information that brings them cash."
Bullock added that a similar breach of privacy had happened "recently" and noted that it broke her heart.
Family Life and Subsequent Loss
Louis is now 16 years old. Bullock also has a 12-year-old daughter, Laila, whom she welcomed via adoption in 2015.
In January 2015, Bullock met photographer Bryan Randall when she hired him to photograph Louis's birthday party, beginning a long-term relationship. Randall died in 2023 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurological condition affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for James for comment but has yet to hear back.
