Actress Shailene Woodley has publicly revealed her disappointment after learning via a phone call that all of her scenes were cut from the 2014 superhero film The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Speaking during a recent SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations panel, the American actress explained that studio officials notified her a full year after she completed filming alongside lead actor Andrew Garfield.
Woodley was cast by director Marc Webb to play Mary Jane Watson, a role she described as her childhood dream. She explained that Spider-Man was her favorite superhero and Mary Jane was her favorite comic book character, making her initial casting extremely exciting.
Trimming Mary Jane From the Sequel
The actress shot approximately three scenes alongside Garfield, who played Peter Parker. However, about a year after production concluded, she received a surprising phone call informing her that her character had been dropped from the final cut.
Production staff told Woodley that the sequel had introduced numerous new characters and that filmmakers wanted to focus on the romantic relationship between Parker and Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone.
She was informed that producers preferred to wait until after the storyline surrounding Gwen Stacy reached its conclusion before introducing Mary Jane as a new love interest. Woodley noted that while the logic made sense at the time, the studio ultimately never made that subsequent film.
According to what was communicated to her, executives decided to remove Mary Jane because they believed introducing an additional romantic interest for Parker would confuse viewers. Woodley joked that nobody knows the true reason, adding that she might simply have delivered a poor performance that led to her removal.
Producer Response at 2014 Premiere
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released in May 2014 as the second installment in Sony Pictures' rebooted Spider-Man franchise starring Garfield. Woodley is widely known for her prominent roles in film and television, including the film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent movie series.
During the film's New York premiere in 2014, producer Matt Tolmach addressed the decision to cut Woodley's scenes in an interview with Variety. Tolmach stated that the production team attempted to include more narrative than could fit into the movie.
Tolmach explained that the project had a 148-page script and that filmmakers realized during the editing process that Mary Jane's storyline could not be accommodated within the final film.
