Going to sleep with wet hair increases the risk of strand breakage and scalp irritation due to friction against pillowcases, lifestyle magazine Grazia reported.
Grazia explained that water temporarily causes the hair fiber to swell, lifting the cuticle, which is the outer protective layer of the hair. This leaves strands far more susceptible to physical strain throughout the night.
The publication noted that water itself does not damage the hair shaft directly. Instead, damage occurs when damp hair experiences constant friction against bedding fabric as a person moves during sleep.
The hair cuticle is composed of overlapping dead skin cells that shield the delicate inner cortex. When wet hair swells, these protective scales lift open, making strands significantly more vulnerable to mechanical friction than when dry.
Risk of Breakage and Frizz
Over time, prolonged night friction raises the likelihood of split ends, breakage, and persistent frizz. Grazia reported that individuals with fine, bleached, or chemically treated hair face a heightened risk of noticeable brittleness.
Leaving moisture in hair for hours also alters its natural structure, leading to knotting, tangling, and a loss of curl definition in wavy or curly hair. By morning, hair can appear dull, disheveled, and difficult to manage or style.
In addition to shaft damage, a damp environment maintained for hours creates ideal conditions for scalp irritation and itching. Grazia warned that persistent moisture promotes the overgrowth of microorganisms naturally present on human skin.
Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory scalp condition linked to lipid-loving yeasts such as Malassezia, which multiply rapidly in warm, moist environments. While a single night with damp hair will not cause lasting harm, Grazia noted that the habit can trigger flare-ups in people with sensitive skin, dandruff, or pre-existing dermatitis.
Protective Habits for Bedtime
To prevent damage, Grazia recommended going to sleep with completely dry hair. When time is limited, individuals should remove excess moisture using a microfiber towel or a hairdryer set to moderate heat.
Synthetic microfiber fabrics possess finely split fibers that absorb water rapidly without requiring aggressive rubbing, minimizing mechanical stress on weakened wet cuticles.
Bedding choices also play a key role, as silk or satin pillowcases generate far less friction than conventional cotton fabric, helping hair stay soft. Furthermore, Grazia advised against tying wet hair into tight hairstyles, which places excessive tension on hair fibers and speeds up breakage.
