A 73-year-old pensioner in northern Spain was rescued by emergency workers after becoming trapped inside a giant wine fermentation barrel on his property.
The incident took place in the small village of Carcedo de Lome, situated in the Spanish region of Asturias. News agency Europa Press reported that the elderly man had climbed into the massive vessel, reportedly intending to perform maintenance work inside the container.
Once inside, the pensioner found himself unable to climb back out through the top opening. Realising he was trapped, he called emergency dispatchers at 8:59 p.m. to report that he was alone on his land and suffocating due to toxic alcohol vapors accumulating within the enclosed space.
A neighbor who noticed the emergency ran to the scene shortly afterwards to offer assistance. The neighbor reached into the vat and held the pensioner above the surface of the wine to keep him from drowning while they waited for specialized help to arrive.
Emergency rescue operation
Firefighters from the nearby municipality of Cangas del Narcea were dispatched to the property to free the trapped man. Emergency crews initially attempted to extract the pensioner through the top opening of the vat, but the hatch proved too narrow for him to be pulled out safely.
Rescuers determined that the safest course of action was to lay the massive container horizontally on the ground. Firefighters then successfully pulled the man out of the barrel at 9:36 p.m., completing the extraction 37 minutes after receiving the original call for help.
Medical personnel evaluated the man at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital for further medical checks. Doctors examined the pensioner and determined that he had suffered no serious injuries during the incident.
Fermentation risks and farm hazards
Large wooden and metal vats are standard equipment across rural Spain during the annual grape harvest and winemaking season. As crushed grapes undergo fermentation, natural yeast converts grape sugars into alcohol while releasing significant volumes of carbon dioxide gas. In confined spaces, dense carbon dioxide gas and concentrated alcohol fumes quickly displace oxygen, creating a severe suffocation hazard for anyone inside.
Carcedo de Lome is a small village within Cangas del Narcea, an area in Asturias widely recognized for its agricultural countryside and traditional winemaking heritage. Europa Press, which published details of the rescue, is one of Spain's main national news gathering agencies.
