Amazon Prime Video fantasy series The Rings of Power will focus on the Dark Lord Sauron as its central protagonist in season three.
The upcoming season marks a key turning point in the legacy of Middle-earth as the villain begins forging the One Ring in Mordor, showrunner Patrick McKay confirmed.
The dramatic conclusion of the second season left the fate of Middle-earth hanging in the balance after depicting the moment Sauron forged the Rings of Power for the Elves, the Dwarves, and Men. After murdering Adar, the villain retook control of the armies of Mordor with the explicit intention of expanding his dominion, while the remaining characters were left in complex situations.
Time Jump and the Second Age Conflict
The third season will introduce a time jump of several years, placing the narrative directly in the middle of the escalating conflict between the Elves and Sauron. This confrontation marks a decisive moment during the Second Age of Middle-earth, the historical era created by author J. R. R. Tolkien that precedes the events of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
According to McKay, upcoming episodes on Prime Video will show the start of Sauron's objective as he forges the One Ring in Mordor. The master ring is used to control all others, allowing the villain to spread his influence across Middle-earth and turn the ring-bearers into his servants.
