Tom Holland could pocket $20 million to $25 million from his combined base salary and box office bonuses for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, according to CheatSheet. The 30-year-old actor reprises his role as Peter Parker in the film, which has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to take the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie earned $360 million in its first three days after its July 31 release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
How Holland's Pay Has Grown
When Holland entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, his payday was around $250,000, according to CheatSheet. He then earned $1.5 million for 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming through a $500,000 base salary plus bonuses.
For 2019's Far From Home, Holland was paid $4 million, and that figure is believed to have risen to $10 million for 2021's No Way Home.
Comparing Past Spider-Man Salaries
Andrew Garfield, 42, reportedly took home $500,000 for 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and $1 million to $2 million for its 2014 sequel, according to Deadline. Tobey Maguire, 51, earned $4 million as the first live-action Spider-Man in 2002.
That figure rose to $17.5 million for 2004's Spider-Man 2. Spider-Man 3, released in 2007, brought Maguire a $15 million base salary plus 7.5 percent on the backend, according to Just Jared.
Box Office Records Fall
Brand New Day has already hit $1 billion at the global box office, The Hollywood Reporter reported on Tuesday. Sony Pictures said the film, which also stars Zendaya and Sadie Sink, grossed $1.05 billion within six days, making it the second-fastest film to reach that mark.
In April 2019, Avengers: Endgame opened with $1.2 billion in worldwide earnings in its first weekend. Sony noted the new film pushed Endgame's $357.1 million domestic opening total to second place, though Endgame's global opening figure of remains ahead of Brand New Day's $932 million worldwide opening.
Studio and Critical Reaction
Holland's latest turn as Peter Parker came with a $225 million budget. Tom Rothman, chairperson of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, told The Hollywood Reporter that all the geniuses who said theatrical movies were dead are not necessarily right, adding that the theatrical marketplace is booming right now and that he is very optimistic.
Critics have praised Brand New Day as one of the best Spider-Man films and a return to form for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Telegraph's Robbie Collin called it the best Spider-Man film since Tobey Maguire wore the red-and-blue suit. One change in the new film lets Parker shoot webs directly from his wrists rather than using the mechanical device seen in earlier installments, which Collin called a masterstroke that restores the showmanship of the Maguire-Sam Raimi years.
