In a showdown between Epicenter and Zandon, Rich Strike arrived at the Rail Closing Steps with an incredible 80-1 comeback in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
Jockey Sonny Leon led Rich Strike from a distance of 20 horsepower to defeat an epicenter favorite 4-1 by three-quarters of its length. Zandon was three-quarters higher than Churchill Downs, ahead of former President Donald Trump.
Rich Strike is the second-biggest disaster in the race’s 148-year history. He paid $163.60 for the win. Only Donerail in 1913 had a higher payout of $184.90.
Rich Strike wasn’t even in the derby until Friday, when the Ethereal Road tore open, making way for a bay foal trained by Eric Reed. Both Venezuela’s Leon and Reed were in the first derby. Leon regularly walks in small circles, even in Ohio.
Leon’s train ride was reminiscent of jockey Calvin Borrell in 2009’s Mine That Bird. Mine That Bird paid $103.20 for the win.
Rich Strike was purchased by owner RED TR-Racing LLC for $30,000 last fall when he took part in a low-cost racing campaign from former owner Calumet Farm.
Rich Strike raised $1.86 million for his second career win.
