For Mayor Max, making Idyllwild a lifetime leader is a full-time job. “Mary goes out in public every day and on weekends,” said Phil Mueller, her chief of staff. “We are just doing good and loving things for people. But we do this all day. ”
This is a great job for a 9 year old Golden Retriever. Yes, the official mayor of the Idyllwild Strange Mountain Community, located in the San Jacinto Mountains above Palm Springs, is a dog, the perfect pet for an unincorporated town that prides itself on its creativity and community. “We don’t have more local politicians than Mayor Max,” Mueller said. “If we have to do something, we create a group and we do it.”

This creative and community spirit attracts more and more people in the entertainment business looking for a rural retreat or a fresh start. Maureen Jones of Lily Rock Realty, who has lived in Idyllwild for 57 years, has seen the pandemic accelerate the area’s popularity. “We have seen incredible growth from Los Angeles as well as other communities since COVID. “Many of our buyers are trying to make Idyllwild their home,” he said.

But Hollywood’s passion for Idyllwild, as it grows, is not new. A two-hour drive from Los Angeles, it’s been a haven for stars like Clark Gable, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and Frank Sinatra. Laura Dern said she got pregnant in Idyllwild when her parents were filming in 1966. wild angels. For decades, artists, musicians and writers including Ansel Adams, Woody Guthrie and jazz musician Marshall Hawkins have been drawn to the Pine Cove area of Idyllwild, which now has a population of 2,500. Mueller says: “It feels like a big family. “People go to the supermarket and the post office in their pajamas.”
According to writer and producer Angelina Burnett (Stop and set fire), this spirit of unity dates back centuries. “It was the summer house in Cahuila. “It was a place where everyone gathered in the summer, when it was very hot in the desert, because you could see მათ all over its territory,” he said. “There’s Tahkvits Rock, which is a big rock that you can see from the city, it’s a really spiritual and important place in their culture and their tribe. I’ve always joked that there’s a magnet in this rock. “When you go there, it restores your polarity and you remove it forever.”
Despite its reputation as a village retreat for artists and creators, as well as boarding school for the Idyllwild Academy of the Arts and annual film festival, this area was until recently one of Southern California’s best kept secrets. “Maybe 15 years ago I thought, ‘Idyllwild is seconds away from being the hot spot where people in Los Angeles hang out,’” says Burnett. .

After his long career, he wrote for shows including nanny s keep standingHamil and her husband were ready for the move. “I was pretty retired at the time,” he says. “Everything I did was just online. We said, “Why are we still in Los Angeles?” We were looking in the Los Angeles area and for $800,000 you could buy a house in Silmar, right next to Metak Lab. So we said, “Okay, wait a minute.” Here we start looking and almost immediately we find something. In 2018 we moved here and we will never look back.

Many new buyers face the burden of expensive fire insurance but find that Idyllwild is still more affordable than other nearby retreats. When an Echo Park screenwriter (who prefers privacy when it comes to real estate) was looking for a second home, he found a 1970s A-frame with a large deck. “You really get more for your money,” he says. “One of the items on our wish list was a sense of privacy, which might not seem like a big deal, but it’s hard to get in a more integrated area if you’re not buying a complex or something.”
Adds Burnett: “It’s just an amazing way to slow down. The stars are amazing. You will never have such stars in the city.”
