Under the influence: Netflix sued
Released in September 2022, Under the influence is a French film directed by David M. Rosenthal with Camille Rowe and Sofiane Zermani in the lead roles. After only a few days, the feature film had climbed to number one in the rankings The 10 best movies in the world the most viewed on the platform.
The story follows Roxana (Camille Rowe), a young woman who has chosen to leave her Parisian life behind to take freediving lessons in Porquerelles. There, she met Pascal Gauthier (Sofiane Zermani), a star freediver, and they quickly started a passionate relationship. However, when Roxana began breaking several freediving records, Pascal felt threatened by her and the end of the film strongly questioned whether he would have deliberately sabotaged her equipment to kill her.
The film was loosely based on the tragic true story of Audrey Mestre, a young French freediver, died while diving in the Dominican Republic in 2002. Her husband Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras had been identified by a former friend of hers (and co-organizer of the fatal dive) who had raised the possibility that the latter was involved in the tragic death of the Frenchwoman. A possibility then taken from the film Under the influence and that Netflix is now worth suing.
A defamation lawsuit
variety we learn today that Francisco Ferreras has decided to sue Netflix for defamation. He accuses the streaming platform of portraying him as a murderer :
I don’t know how people can do such a thing. They turned history upside down. They put it in their sauce. He really hurt me.
he told Variety from Cuba.
The director, for his part, said he wasn’t worried:
It is a fiction based on an already well publicized story. I wrote a fiction, with imaginary characters. I’m sure he’s trying to make money by suing Netflix.
Even if a message at the beginning of the film indicated that it was an opera loosely based on true eventsthe end of the feature ended with real pictures of Audrey Mestre.
