James Gray has brought his family’s story deeply personal and intimate. the time of armageddon — a film set in the 1980s with characters from the Trump family — at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night, where it was followed by a hearty six-minute ovation.
At the end of the applause, Gray and several movie stars, including Anne Hathaway, wept. “I’ve been to Cannes five times, I’ve never spoken to him before. I can only thank you all for coming here. The Focus Features release was written and directed by Gray, largely based on his creation in Queens, New York. The coming-of-age story features a young, middle-class Jewish man (essay) who transitions from public to private school with the help of his tough but loving grandfather (Anthony Hopkins). In the transition period, he leaves a friend (the web) and faces a moral dilemma.
It contained a scathing critique of conservative politics at a time when actors played members of Donald Trump’s family, including Fred Trump Sr., Donald’s father, and Mary Ann Trump, Donald’s sister. In one scene, Mary Ann, played by Jessica Chastain, gives a speech at a private school about self-confidence. Tovah Feldshuh is also a star.
The film is one of 21 titles competing for the 75th edition of the Palme d’Or Festival this year. Its premiere took place on the third day in front of a 2,000-seat theater. Julia Roberts escaped the red carpet and arrived with artistic director and co-chairman of Chopard Caroline Scheufele. Other participants included TikTok star Xabi Lami and actress Deepika Padukone.
