Eric Clapton cancels two shows in Europe after testing positive for COVID

Eric Clapton, a critic of coronavirus vaccines and pandemic restrictions, has tested positive for COVID-19 and canceled two upcoming European shows.

Clapton’s upcoming shows will be postponed to Zurich on Tuesday and Milan on Wednesday, he said on his Facebook page and official website online. The 77-year-old rocker tested positive after performing at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 8.

“Eric also wants to ensure that no infection spreads to any of his groups, teams, promoters, staff and, of course, fans,” the statement said. He hopes to resume the tour with two shows in Bologna on 20 May.

“It is unfortunate that Eric avoided ending COVID, and throughout the period of travel restrictions, Eric had to comply with COVID at this time,” the statement said.

Clapton has expressed skepticism about the COVID-19 vaccine in the past. In 2020, he and Van Morrison released an anti-lockdown song called “Stand and Deliver” which reads, “Do you want to be a free man if you want to be a slave?” He also criticized it a year later with the song “This Has Gotta Stop”.

Clapton received both AstraZeneca vaccines against the virus, but said he had “severe reactions” and feared he would never play again. The CDC says clinical trials have found the vaccine to be safe.
