James Bond : an institution
James Bond has been the pride of British fiction for half a century now. Indeed, the character created by novelist Ian Fleming has become an essential figure in spy cinema, or even the seventh art altogether. Then the saga James Bond it currently has 25 films (plus two unofficial films), released between 1962 and today. In these 25 films, the witty agent 007 took the form of six different actors. One of the main rules imposed by the rights holders of the saga is that the directors as well as the actors come from the Commonwealth.
Since Daniel Craig said goodbye to the saga in 2021, the production has therefore been looking for a new talented performer to play Britain’s most famous spy. And for many years, rumors about the names of prestigious actors have been accumulating, which leads to denials and sometimes some controversy. Among the alleged suitors, we have thus seen Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddelston, Henry Cavill, Taron Egerton, Regé-Jean Page or even Aaron Taylor-Johnson succeed one another.
The Young Danger
Since 1981, the choice of actor to embody James Bond has been made in part by casting director Debbie McWilliams. During an interview with Radio Timesthe latter has expressed a clear opinion on the actors who should play Agent 007. In fact, according to her, the ideal James Bond would not be found among the young candidates :
We watched a lot of young actors. And I don’t think they had the seriousness, they didn’t have the experience or the mental capacity to do it, because it’s just not the role to take. It’s a huge responsibility.
During the interview, Debbie McWilliams also admits that during the production of Casino Royale, the door had initially been opened to young actors. Among them, a certain Henry Cavill had tried his luck. However, the mixed results made the casting director change his mind, preferring to rely on an actor in his thirties and a little drunk. That’s how Daniel Craig was cast and he started a 15-year cycle brilliantly. So could this actor be Aaron Taylor-Johnson, favored to play James Bond? Indeed, the 32-year-old actor revealed by the saga Kick ass became an established actor in the world of cinema. Like Daniel Craig before him, he may have the shoulders and the maturity to embody 007.

A star to play Bond?
However, during her interview, Debbie McWilliams hinted that we shouldn’t get carried away with the nature of the comedian either. There’s no guarantee that the next James Bond will be played by a big star. The director thus recalls that Daniel Craig, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore or even Sean Connery were certainly actors known to a certain audience, but they were not yet confirmed stars. It is therefore possible that the production of the saga pursues this idea by hiring an actor who certainly has experience, but which still has a limited reputation.
