Gladiator: Russell Crowe found scenario ‘completely useless’

Gladiator : a sequel more than 20 years later

Russell Crowe he has several famous roles to his credit. But if it were necessary to keep only one, it would necessarily be the one of Maximum inside Gladiator (2000). One of Ridley Scott’s great films which, more than twenty years later, will be entitled to a sequel. The director intends to focus this time on Lucius, the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix in the first film). Several names have already been announced, including Paul Mescal to play Lucius, while Barry Keoghan and Denzel Washington should also be in the cast.

No Russell Crowe so for Gladiator 2. At least that’s what the actor himself said and what seems more logical given his tragic fate at the end of the first work. Which doesn’t stop him from being jealous of young actors who, in turn, will have this experience.

"Maximum

Recently, Russell Crowe mentioned its main roles in an interview given to variety. The actor was then obviously brought up for discussion Gladiator. While we knew the actor hated the film’s cult line (“My name is Massimo Decimo Meridio…“), this time he confessed at the start of production the script did not suit him. And he’s not overreacting by outright saying that he thinks the script was completely useless.

Russell Crowe didn’t like the script

Specify at first that you are not sure about “the world around him“. The concept was great, but the script by Gladiator era “it sucks, it completely sucks, with all sorts of weird sequences“. Russell Crowe then takes as an example a scene that was supposed to show the relationship with the gladiatorial celebrity.

One of the sequences was about chariots and the fact that the most famous gladiators used certain types of chariots and had sponsorship deals for things like olive oil. That’s all true, but it just wouldn’t have felt right to the audience at the time. They would say, “What the fuck is this?”. The energy around what we do was very fragmented.

Described in this way, this scene can really seem strange. And Russell Crowe admits he’s thought about it take a plane and let it all go. But Ridley Scott would be able to convince him to continue. According to the actor, the director would have had a conversation with him to reassure him and would have told him: “We won’t film anything if you don’t believe it 100%”. It was therefore necessary to take some time to review the scenario of Gladiatorwhich logically caused a delay, which was later recovered.

When we started the film, we had 21 pages of script that we agreed on. A screenplay is usually 103, 104 or 110 pages, something like that. So we had a long way to go and basically used those pages in the first part of the film. By the time we got to our second filming location, Morocco, we were able to catch up.
