Love and Forests: From Novel to Film
For her sixth directorial feature, Valérie Donzelli has chosen to adapt the novel Love and forests by Eric Reinhardt published in 2014.
Co-written by Audrey Diwan (The event), the film deals with the theme of spousal harassment through the story of Blanche and Grégoire, played by Virginie Efira and Melvil Poupaud. After an idyllic start to a relationship, a marriage and two children, Blanche gradually finds herself trapped in a toxic relationship and under the influence of a possessive and dangerous husband. Despite her attempts to elude his power, nothing seems to stop Grégoire from directing his wife’s life.
Love and forests will be presented on May 24 at Cannes Film Festival and will be released in theaters on the same day.
Two roles in one for Virginie Efira
In addition to playing the role of Blanche in the film by Valérie Donzelli, Virginie Efira also plays the the character’s twin sister, Rose. It is the director’s invention, the latter does not exist in Eric Reinhardt’s novel.
