How to determine the deficiency of female hormones in the body: a quick pinch test

Estrogen is the main female hormone. Its deficiency leads to reproductive complications, weight gain in problem areas and premature aging of the skin. And even until early menopause! This is why it is so important to monitor it and try to maintain its optimal level.

To assess the level of estrogen in the body, it is necessary to take a biochemical blood test. But let’s be honest: many of us rarely go to the doctor. And they are afraid to donate blood!

We do not in any way encourage you to refuse regular medical examinations. But if you want to quickly check whether everything is in order with your female hormones, you can first take an express test at home – and only then go to a specialist.

All you have to do is pinch a small fold of skin on the outside of your hand and hold it there for about 10 seconds. Then release the skin and watch how quickly the skin straightens.

Estrogen affects skin firmness and the production of collagen and elastin. This is why when hormone levels decrease, the skin becomes less elastic and does not react as quickly as before.

  • In women under 30, the fold of skin after pinching should straighten instantly.

  • In women aged 30-40, the fold may take about 5 seconds

  • For women under 50, the crease straightens in about 8 seconds.

  • At 50+, the fold may take longer than 8 seconds

If you are within the pinch test timeframe, you probably don’t have estrogen deficiency – or it is present, but so far to a mild degree. If your skin has taken longer to regain its original shape, it’s time to sound the alarm and contact an endocrinologist.

For additional assessment of the result, such a test can be performed not only on the arm, but also on the neck or the skin around the eyes. In these areas, the skin is thinner and immediately indicates the presence of possible problems.
