When Apple says no to Michael Bay

At one point in the film, Agent Simmons (John Turturro) explains to the other characters (and incidentally to the audience) the origin of the Transformers. Initially, Michael Bay wanted his character to use a Apple iPods. But Steve Jobs, then Brand CEO, refused to allow any of its products to be used in Michael Bay’s film. He then turned to Nokia who accepted the collaboration.

A promotional campaign like no other

As part of the film’s promotion campaign, a special Sector 7 website was released. This featured videos providing “evidence” that the Transformers had already arrived on Earth. A video with grimlocks destroy a construction site, Reflector turn into a birthday party, Knockback AND Laser beak accidentally recorded on video. And a safety video showing Bumblebee (in its former Volkswagen Beetle mode) turning into a parking lot.

The Army to Michael Bay’s Rescue

To keep the film realistic and within budget, the United States Department of Defense provided production support for the film. It’s the biggest project I’ve ever helped From The Fall of the Black Falcon (2001). The military supplied their vehicles as alternate modes of the Decepticons Starscream and Bonecrusher. They also allowed filming of their F-22 and CV-22 aircraft.

This is the first time these aircraft have been seen in a feature film From Hulk (2003). Soldiers acted as extras and the actors were given authentic uniforms. In return for these favors, the filmmakers gave the soldiers an early screening of the film, free of charge.
