The Infinity Stones of the MCU: James Gunn “invented this bullshit” in 1h30

The Infinity Stones of the MCU: James Gunn “invented this bullshit” in 1h30

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 : box approaching

Released May 3, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 mark it last participation of James Gunn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Indeed, the director has just concluded his trilogy that began in 2014. A touching and largely convincing last ride before his final exit from the franchise to the DC Universeof which he has recently become the big boss.

This third Guardians of the Galaxy adventure met mostly positive reviews. From both the press and viewers. Above all, in less than two weeks of operation, the feature film has made more than 475 million dollars in worldwide box office receipts. which is already as much as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania with which he had finished his race $475.7 million recipes around the world.

Thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy 3, James Gunn has managed to wrap up a complete, well-developed and totally coherent story within the MCU, but one that is often a steamroller for the creativity of its artists.

During an interview with Phase Zero, the director, then in the company of Chris Pratt, returned to the first part of his saga. He later revealed that Kevin Feige had asked him to add Guardians of the Galaxy a Infinity Stone subplot.

“I made up this bullshit in an hour and a half”

In fact, at that moment, the boss of Marvel Studios set the stage for Avengers: Infinity War AND Avengers: Finale. In this logic, he has introduced the different stones of infinity into his productions. The Tesseract inside Captain America, Thor AND avengersthe stone of reality in Thor: The Dark Worldthe Time Stone inside Doctor Strangeetc.

Thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy, the MCU introduces the Power Stone. It is this artifact that is coveted by the various members of the Guardians but also by Ronan the accuser. And so James Gunn finds himself compelled to write on this subject of the Infinity Stones. He then explained that he imagined the scene with The Collector (Benicio Del Toro) in just 1h30. An important sequence as it allows you to explain to the viewers the functioning and purpose of the infinity gems:

I wrote this scene in about an hour and a half. And it’s become what we know from the Infinity Stones to the cinema… The whole MCU is then based on that. They told me, “You know, we were thinking about integrating the Power Stone into your story.” So I said, “Okay. Ok, the Collector will have the Power Stone. And I made up all that bullshit!

Small accuracy all the same, James Gunn is obviously not the inventor of the Infinity Stones. These gems have been introduced in 1972 a Marvel Premiere #1. When he says he invented “all that bullshit” he’s actually talking about the role played by the Infinity Stones in the MCU.
