Asterix and Obelix: the middle empire “not a failure” for Guillaume Canet

Released in French theaters on February 1, Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom is one of the most expensive films in the history of French cinema. Directed by Guillaume Canet, tells a new plot of the two most famous Gauls in the world, making them travel to China to help a princess in difficulty.

At the French box office, the feature film attracted more than four and a half million admissions to theaters. A decidedly lower score than the other films in the saga (the record is still held by Cleopatra mission by Alain Chabat released in 2002 and its 14 million viewers).

Despite a disappointing box office score, Guillaume Canet doesn’t consider his film a failure, far from it. Indeed, the director who also plays the title role of Asterix alongside Gilles Lellouche told JDD (via BFM extension) who was satisfied with his film’s soundtrack:

It is absolutely not a failure. It has been sold all over the world and to date has made more than 2 million international appearances, with successes in Europe, in Poland for example (…) We forget that before Avatar launched the movement at the end of the pandemic, few films made these figures (…)

Furthermore, Guillaume Canet denied the rumor that it would be necessary The Middle Empire exceeds the threshold of six million visitors to be profitable.

Responds to criticism

In addition to having reacted to the rumors about the film’s financial failure, Guillaume Canet also wanted to confide in the killer reviews that the feature received, claiming it was “never enjoyable”:

I worked for five years to get what I wanted to do: a great adventure show. Some people like it, some don’t. The best ratings or reviews don’t always go to the movies that attract the most viewers.

Additionally, he has responded to more personal attacks on his cinema:

It hurts, of course. I hope to make another film that my detractors like more and change their mind about my work.

Finally, he concluded by saying that he wasn’t sure if he would make it again a blockbuster of this magnitude in the more or less near future:

I don’t forbid myself that I want a great new car in a few years. But today I prefer something more intimate (…) with a smaller team and maybe even less pressure.
