My Father & Me: What is this comedy with Robert De Niro?

My father and me : the joys of the family

After Me and my stepfather AND My grandfather and meRobert De Niro is now on the bill of My father and me. Three feature films that are not part of the same franchise at all but are all part of it Grumpy universe of Robert De Niroa family comedy series in which the immense actor growls, moans and enjoys forcing his famous facial expressions without any restrictions.

Here the star lends his likeness to Salvo, an Italian-American hairdresser who continues to tirelessly devote himself to his salon despite his advanced age. As Thanksgiving approaches, his son Sebastian (Sebastian Maniscalco) is invited by his partner Ellie’s (Leslie Bibb) family. But he feels guilty for leaving his father alone, just a year after his mother’s death. Sebastian then reluctantly decides to take Salvo along, fearing that he will shame him to the in-laws. And as soon as they arrive, the lag causes embarrassing situations to say the least.

Robert De Niro in great shape

Between two serious projects like amsterdam AND The flower moon killersRobert De Niro allows himself a moment of levity with My father and me. Grumbling in Italian, sporting a lurid ponytail in brief but hilarious flashbacks, cooking peacock or displaying baffling naturalness in a stuffy restaurant, the comedian is having a field day, obviously happy to join the antics of comedian Sebastian Maniscalco. Appeared in Green Book: On the Southern Roads AND The Irishthe latter is also the screenwriter of My father and medirected by Laura Terruso (Good girls get high).

The cartoon echoes the style of his shows, once again drawing inspiration from his immigrant father’s harsh upbringing and the cultural differences he witnessed. A style that made his reputation on the stage but which he unfortunately transposes rather anecdotally to the cinema, the film causes smiles but few giggles. While Ellie, her mother Tigger (Kim Cattrall) and their loved ones quickly fade into the background, Salvo and Sebastian form despite everything a touching father/son duothe tenderness and admiration they have for each other managing to emerge through a few complicit glances and jokes, which perfectly sum up their inability to communicate.

Lacking in surprises and never fully exploiting the gap between the two families, My father and me it imposes itself upon arrival as a sympathetic and concerted comedy, never unpleasant but soon forgettable. In splendid form, Robert De Niro enjoys himself and seems more concerned than in certain disasters of his filmography such as show time OR Happy New Year.

My father and me it is to be discovered in cinemas from May 31, 2023.
