The Little Mermaid: why is the ending of the film different from the cartoon? Rob Marshall answers us

The Little Mermaid comes to life in cinemas

Thirty-four years after the release of the cult Disney cartoon, Ariel returns to the cinema, this time in the flesh in live action The little Mermaid directed by Rob Marshall. It is, as with most live-action remakes of Disney classics, a close cut/paste of the original film. However, this variation still delivers minor adjustmentslike the ending of the feature film, different from that of the 1989 cartoon.

Thus, while the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) has become omnipotent thanks to the trident and has transformed into a huge sea creature ready to wreak havoc, Ariel (Halle Bailey) manages to kill her thanks to the mast of Prince Eric’s (Jonah Hauer-King) sailboat and thus save the people of the Ocean. Now, if you remember the cartoon The little Mermaidit was Eric who defeated Ursula, not Ariel.

A different ending: explains Rob Marshall

After asking him why the cult sequence with Chef Louis was missing in this live-action remake, we asked Rob Marshall why it was Ariel who killed Ursula in the film, and not Eric:

The ending of the cartoon felt a bit dated to me, to be honest. From the beginning, Ariel’s story has focused on a clear goal: to overcome Ursula, who represents an obstacle between the underwater world and that of humans. So it just seemed natural for her to take it down since that’s her story and she’s always been proactive from the start.
