Jeremy Strong portrayed Kendall Roy in the four seasons of the acclaimed Succession

One of the most awarded and acclaimed series of recent years, Succession ended in the fourth season last Sunday, 28, with the episode “With Eyes Open.” However, the last scene of the series could be even sadder, according to Jeremy Stronginterpreter of Kendall Roy.

The episode finally shows the outcome of the purchase of Waystar Royco for the GoJocompany of Lukas Matssonplayed by Alexander Skarsgård. Kendall was absolutely against the action because he wanted to become CEO of waystarcreated by the father, Logan Roy (Brian Cox).

In a vote of the board of waystarwho would decide whether or not to approve the purchase, the sister of Kendall, Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook), decides to change the vote at the last minute – and the company ends up sold to the Swedish billionaire. Completely shaken and saddened by the defeat, Kendall appears in the last scene sitting on a bench and looking at the horizon of a lake in New York.

As Jeremy Strong revealed during an interview with Variety, he wanted the character to jump into the river, as an attempt to take his own life. “To me, what happens in the council vote is an extinction level event for this character,” he stated. There’s no coming back from this… Listen to the poem by John Berryman what Jesse [Armstrong, criador de Succession] gave to those endings.”

“Himself John Berryman died by suicide, jumping into the frozen river,” continued the actor. “I tried to get in the water after we cut – I got up off that bench and went as fast as I could over the barrier and up the stilts, and the actor playing Colin [Scott Nicholson] ran.”

I didn’t know I was going to do this, and he didn’t, but he ran and stopped me. I don’t know if at that moment I felt that Kendall he just wanted to die – I think so – or if he wanted to be essentially saved by an employee of his father.

Although, Strong liked how the series ended, and defined the end of Succession as “much stronger philosophically.” According to the artist, “there is a kind of cycle of doom in which we are all trapped, and Kendall is stuck in this kind of silent scream with Colin there as bodyguard and jailer.”

Then the actor explained how he’s not sure if his character “would have the nerve to actually step into that water.”

My God, that would have been hard to do. But I think you even feel on a cellular level the intention or desire to cross that threshold. the way [Jesse Armstrong] leaves us with a kind of ambivalence remains true to his vision.
