She : the perverse game of Paul Verhoeven
Ten years later Black book and four years after the medium-length film DeceivedPaul Verhoeven made his big comeback in 2016 with She. An adaptation of the book OH… by Philippe Dijan which opens with a terrible scene. While she is alone in her house in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Michèle Leblanc (Isabelle Huppert) is confronted by a hooded individual who has broken in. The man hits and rapes her, then walks away.
To the surprise of those close to her, Michèle did not press charges and resumed her work as if nothing had happened. She undertakes her investigation. She then starts a kinky game with her rapist, which can only end badly. Laurent Lafitte, Charles Berling and Anne Consigny complete the cast of the thriller. Even the film scores the first collaboration between the director of Primitive instinct and Virginia Efirafive years before their sulfur reunion Blessed.
A strange reunion for Virginie Efira
Between these two feature films, the director and the actress meet, but their meeting does not go as planned for Virginie Efira. Going through the show Daily in June 2021 to promote drama about Italian nun Benedetta Carlini, comedian says she spoke to Paul Verhoeven after seeing him at a hotel (via Television 7 days):
I had a role in She. She did very well, by the way. It was great. It was amazing to watch him work, to see Isabelle Huppert at work and everything. And then, shortly after in a hotel, I see him. I’m going to say hello.
Problem : the Dutch director does not recognize her. She adds:
I marked it funny!
Virginie Efira eventually ends up having an explanation of the surprising behavior of Paul Verhoeven. She concludes on this:
And then later I’m offered a book of interviews by Paul Verhoeven and there’s a whole chapter on the subject She. And at one point he talks about me, and says that one day in a hotel he didn’t recognize me, because the character I play was always very elegant.
The actress then deduced thatshe was “dressed like shit” that dayas he ironically states on the show Incidentally in September 2022. Which luckily didn’t stop them from chasing their “wonderful” collaborationin the words of the actress.
