Arnold Schwarzenegger: from bodybuilding to the seventh art

Since it has just unveiled its first series, FUBARArnold Schwarzenegger continues his collaboration with Netflix with Arnolddocumentary in three episodes in which he looks back on his impressive career. The star first talks about his childhood and his breakthrough in weightlifting, before discussing her career in Hollywood, then in politics.

In the early 70s, when he chained the titles of Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia, the athlete got tired and tried to get into the cinema with Hercules in New York, following in the footsteps of his idol Reg Park. But the feature film, for which aspiring actor Arnold Strong is famous for, is an artistic disaster and a box office failure. Considered his Austrian accent incomprehensible, Arnold Schwarzenegger even doubled down on English.

He realizes very quickly that if he knows how to put a show on stage, he doesn’t have any no talent to act on a movie setas he confides in the documentary:

I had never done theater. (…) I barely spoke English. Americans wanted to hear their idols talk like John Wayne, not like me. (…) For five years I have not received offers. Nothing at all. I had to learn a lot, overcome obstacles.

An important first role in Be hungry

But while no one in Hollywood believes him, Arnold Schwarzenegger is given an unexpected opportunity. His friend, weightlifter Charles Gaines, wants his job Be hungry is transposed to the screen and think of him to embody one of the main characters.

Attached to the project, director Bob Rafelson (Five easy pieces) is skeptical of her talent but ends up entrusting it to her the role of Joe Santo, a bodybuilder who trains for the title of Mister Universe. A character made for him physically, and a thousand leagues away from the fairground beast that moved his pectorals Hercules in New York.

To work on his palette of emotions, Arnold Schwarzenegger can count on the support of Professor Eric Morris before filming, then on that of his two partners on screen, the young but already experienced Jeff Bridges (The last session, The Canarder) and Sally Field (Private). The future interpreter of Conan and the Terminator recalls:
