Elliot Page announced he was transgender in December 2020 – and revealed he’s suffered from transphobia ever since
Elliot Pageknown for his roles in Juno (2007) and Umbrella Academy (2019), revealed, in an interview with Esquire, who received a death threat after announcing her gender transition — and said that transphobia is much more intense than homophobia.
“I didn’t expect it to be this big. [a repercussão]. In terms of the actual quality of the response, it was what I expected: love and support from so many people and hate and cruelty from so many others. I came out as gay in 2014 and it’s different. Transphobia is so, so, so extreme. Hatred and cruelty are much more incessant,” said the artist.
During the interview, Page he recalled one day that a man started cursing him in the street, even saying he was going to kill him. “I just wanted to cross the street and I couldn’t. There was traffic. He was so tall, I couldn’t physically do anything. If I said something, he might retaliate. If I turned around, he might do something else. So I just stood there looking ahead. I ran, I was alone. I walked into a convenience store and he said, ‘This is why I need a gun.
Unfortunately, Page dealt directly with transphobia, but that didn’t take away from the actor’s happiness at finally “looking like himself.” “I know I look different to others, but to me, I’m just starting to look like myself. It’s indescribable… And thank God here I am. So the greatest joy is just being able to feel present, literally. Hanging out with a group of new people and being able to get involved in a way that I don’t have that constant feeling of running away from my body, that never-ending feeling of anxiety and nervousness,” he concluded.
